So, I have a Mustang. It’s pretty much sat in this spot since I brought it home a few weeks ago. Reason #1 is that the brakes are kaput, there’s a leak at the master cylinder that could be the master, the brake lines, a loose connection, etc, but whatever the cause, I don’t care. I’m replacing 100% of the brake system anyway.
My brakes are picked out, I’m going with a manual Kelsey-Hayes disc brake setup up front, and simply refreshing the existing drum set up in the rear with new parts. I’m going to replace all of the hard lines front/rear as well. I am still not settled on wheels/tires/suspension yet. I need to get that figured out, because it really is a “do everything at once” situation, especially for the front end. Suffice it to say, shocks, springs, control arms are all getting replaced.
I’m trying to be creative with financing for the project. I had a few old diecas t cars in a box in the basement. I sold 4 of them this week on ebay and managed to source enough money from them to pay for the entire brake system work. Those were the expensive ones that I had, I have another 10-15 that are significantly less expensive, but should still yield another $500 or so for the car fund. My wife has also graciously donated money from kid clothes, toys, etc that she’s sold to neighbors.
The overall plan for the car is still comfy cruiser, for the most part. I really need to protect the budget from scope creep, as it i s easy to exponentially increase the cost when looking at shiny new suspension bits.

Scope creep on a project car? Never.

A man, a plan, a canal, Panama.

umm, you got a mustang now? I thought your heart was dedicated to the similar but other bodied non-mustang classic?

Next thing you know, I’ve got a Coyote, coilover setup, and a 4 link rear.

You’re probably right. I was a dedicated Mustang guy until the Cougar. Now, I keep calling the Mustang the Cougar.

Comfy cruiser but with a feisty small block V8, right?

Needs more supercharger but ok

Personally I love the wheels and stance.

Id like to preserve the stance, just with suspension and tires that’s not (at a minimum) 30 years old. I don’t hate the wheels, but don’t love em either. While the new brakes will fit the 14” wheels that are on there, I’ll most likely go up to a 15” wheel.

I had an old car with manual brakes. I hope you don’t skip leg days.
Really though, it’s not terrible when you know what to expect. It can be a little disconcerting getting back in to it for the first time after driving a more modern car for a while but you get used to it.

Yes. I should do a compression test and see where it currently stands. It sounds good on idle, and is quite throaty. I’m looking forward to getting it on the road!

I need to do a list for my Datsun and just crank it out. I’m kind of unfocused at the moment. 50 year old cars take a lot to keep going.

I’ve had quite a few manual brake cars. The Cougar wasn’t bad once I rebuilt the brakes on that. The low speed manual steering is more of a pain than the brakes. If I thought my wife would want to drive it more, I might change my mind, though.

So far, I have a “get it on the road” list, which will then be followed by “more stuff I need to fix”. I did the parts cannon on the Cougar and want to be a little more organized this time around.

I’ve only briefly driven stuff with manual steering but I agree that’s more of an issue than the brakes. The manual brakes do provide those moments of hilarity when someone who have never driven manual brakes first give them a try. Their eyes get really big and then they stomp on them!

I loooooove the feel of manual brakes, but yeah you better know they’re manual before you need to stop.
Now manual 4-wheel
drums, there’s an eye opener for the uninitiated.

Aside from a go kart, I’ve never driven a vehicle with manual brakes.
I’ve driven a few with manual steering and it’s not a problem on a lighter vehicle.

The wheels look fine to me. I would consider replacing them a low priority compared to taking care of all the maintenance and safety stuff.
Mind you, I’m guessing you’ll have better tire options with a 15" wheel.

If they really do fit over the new brakes, I may keep em for now and just put cheap rubber on them to help me discover any road going issues.

The Cougar was fine with manual steering and brakes. If I had to choose between the two, I’d say steering to upgrade first. That said, adding power to the brakes isn’t terribly expensive.
